Discovering new patterns is always exciting. When we came across the herringbone pattern on a simple yet very intricate painting, we immediately were inspired to start our next project.
"It's called herringbone, Shruti, not HEPPINGBURROW!!"
The project itself required my simple painting skills and Tracy's eye for precision with measurements. Although the painting itself isn't tough, it took a while for us to make sure the pattern was symmetrical.
Materials:
- Canvas (18' x 24')
- Acrylic paints (choose a color scheme you want and go with it! We decided to use blues, reds and white). We generally use Acrylics because we like the opaqueness they provide, as well as the fact that they dry really fast!
- White and gold spray paint
- Painter's tape
- Ruler, pencil, scissors and some thread
Process
Step 1:
We spray painted the canvas with a base color - gold. We knew we were going to add more colors on top which is why we didn't evenly spray the entire canvas.Step 2:
The most fun part: we went crazy painting random swatches of paint all over the canvas, we had a little bit too much fun with it.Step 3:
The most boring part (I let Tracy do all the work here): we measured the canvas depending on how detailed we wanted the herringbone pattern to be. Using a piece of thread, taped with equal distances across the board, we made our guidelines for where to stick the tape for our final pattern.Step 4:
We forgot to take a photo of the most essential part of the process, but oh well we will allow you to get creative with it! This took us a lot of time to do, we had to measure and arrange the tape in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, as you can see below:Step 5:
Once we had the tape on as we please, we sprayed the entire board with a white spray can, we decided to omit some of the tape just to have an interesting pattern. We then let this dry overnight.
Step 6:
The second most fun part! We removed all of the tape and saw our hard work finally come to life. The end moment is probably the best part of every single project. And voila, here it is the final product:
I went on and used the herringbone pattern to make this simple panel for my apartment:
